Note Taking skills

1. Always read the Learning Objectives at the beginning of each chapter
> 1.1 through 1.4 = as readers, there are four areas that we are to look for to answer
a. Are representational images and shelters considered art and architecture? Why? Why not?
b. Understand the variety of forms / their potential meaning / materials and process of making
c. What changes occurred culturally during the prehistoric times as people advanced into the Neolithic period?
d. What is the construction of megalithic architecture? Name and identify the forms.
     ** By the end of this chapter you should be able to comprehend the over arching information being delivered and will be able to visually identify the examples used.

2. Always indicate page numbers

3. Note dates of study. Visualize it on a time line. What came before it?

4. Chapter title is indicated below left and right 

5. Note area of study

6. Note cultural characteristics of study

7. Note how objects are made > materials / tools / application / who made them?

8. Text that is bolded are the subcategories within the area of study
  •     Words within categories are of importance for vocabulary. Understand them.
  •     p. 20 sculpture in the round > what does this mean specifically?
  •     p. 21 WOMAN OF WILLENDORF > Identify the sculpture, its size, where its from, period of time it was made, what is it made of and how? Why is it named this? Why not "The Venus of Willendorf" ?


9. Images are important, note what they are indicating visually. They call for our attention to focus on them. Why these particular pieces and not others?
  • Published on p. 20 we have map noting geographical area, where in the world are we?
  • Note what it is being communicated
  • Two images on the adjacent page illustrates sculptural forms from the period of study
  • What is the material they are made from? 
  • What are the sculptures visually communicating? Are they representation? Are they abstract? What is their size? Why are they not larger or smaller?
  • How do you think they were made? 
  • What kind of tools do you think were used?
